The Uusi Aalto Project the City of Rovaniemi are launching a photography competition that invites everyone interested in photography to capture Alvar Aalto’s Rovaniemi from their own perspective. The theme of the competition is ” Aalto’s Rovaniemi – Architectural Moments and Perspectives"
The aim of the competition is to highlight the significance of Alvar Aalto’s architectural works as part of Rovaniemi’s cityscape, history and everyday life. At the same time, the competition encourages participants to view familiar surroundings from new angles and to explore the role of architecture in people’s daily lives and encounters.
The competition is open to everyone interested in photography. Subjects may include, for example, the Aalto Centre, its buildings and surroundings, or any other site in Rovaniemi designed by Alvar Aalto. The competition includes two categories: Aalto Centre and Other Alvar Aalto-Designed Sites in Rovaniemi.
The competition runs from 10 July to 10 November 2026. Each participant may submit a maximum of four (4) photographs. Entries will be judged anonymously, with evaluation based on criteria such as visual impact, originality, creativity and the way Alvar Aalto’s architecture is expressed in the photograph.
Photography competition is organised as part of the City of Rovaniemi’s Alvar Aalto Architecture as a Growth Factor for All-Year-Round Tourism in Rovaniemi Project, which aims to strengthen Rovaniemi’s position as a city of architecture and to develop new, sustainable and feasible initiatives based on Aalto’s architectural heritage and other architectural assets. The project supports the city’s strategic goals of increasing year-round cultural and architectural tourism, strengthening local identity, and promoting socially and culturally sustainable development.
