Ode to Rovaniemi – a tribute to Finland’s Arctic capital

9/7/2018 9:00 AM

For around a year, no matter the season, a huge number of moments and places have been recorded in Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland. The resulting film, Ode to Rovaniemi, which was produced by the city in collaboration with Flatlight Creative House, is finally ready for viewing.

The film "Ode to Rovaniemi" combines high-quality visual presentation with music composed and produced by composer-musician Janne Airaksinen, who was inspired by the vibes, natural environment, architecture, people, landscapes, memories and anecdotes of the city of Rovaniemi. The idea was to give Ode to Rovaniemi a look and feel reminiscent of the city inhabitants.

“It’s been great to see the enthusiasm with which large groups of citizens of Rovaniemi participated in making the film during the year. We hope that both townspeople and visitors take ownership of the work and proudly share its message and feelings,” says Riikka Heikkilä, Head of Communications.

Rovaniemi is internationally known as Santa’s home town, and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Finland. It is also an active city close to nature, offering a wide variety of services and events. Another aim is to spread this message internationally. Diverse use will be made of different versions of the film in order to enhance the pulling power of Rovaniemi.

“It’s been wonderful to have the chance to tell Rovaniemi’s story both visually and in sound. Rovaniemi is made special by each person, place, moment and season here. It’s now time to pass the communications baton to current, former and future residents of the city. Don’t hesitate to start using the videos and soundtrack and pass on the message,” says the director, Miikka Niemi.

Ode to Rovaniemi will be shown on the Night of the Arts, on 8 September, as part of the ongoing Rovaniemi Week. The video will be projected onto the wall of the Wiljami Culture House from 9pm to 9.30pm on Saturday at Urheilukatu 1.

Ode to Rovaniemi can also be watched on the City of Rovaniemi’s YouTube channel, and it's availeble also on the social media and the city’s own website (Rovaniemi.fi).
