Natural Science Collections and Advisory Services

The natural science collection comprises tens of thousands of specimens and is systematically expanded.

The Diptera collection consists primarily of specimens donated by Jukka Salmela, Lauri Paasivirta, and Jouni Penttinen, and includes type specimens. The botanical collection consists mainly of vascular plants collected by Pauli Sipilä. In addition, the collection contains several school herbaria as well as fungal, moss, and lichen specimens. The geological collection includes a broad selection of rock types from Lapland, such as quartz, quartzite, limonite, dolomite, haematite, and granulite. The geological rock specimens have been digitised.

Digitisation of the biological collections began in autumn 2017. Metadata for each specimen (species, date and place of collection, etc.) are entered into the Kotka collections management system and are publicly accessible at: https://laji.fi/observation/list?collectionId=HR.2249
