Maintenance of Roads and Pathways

The City of Rovaniemi is responsible for the winter maintenance of driving lanes, planting strips, and pedestrian and cycling paths.

For street areas adjacent to a property, both the property owner (or holder) and the city share maintenance responsibilities. The property is responsible for cleaning the street area up to the centerline of the street, including the sidewalk, planting strip, green area, cycle path, and driving lane.

The property is also responsible for winter maintenance of the sidewalk, which includes snow removal, transport of snow away from the site, and gritting (sand or gravel spreading). Clearing snow from driveways and access points also falls under the property owner's responsibility.

In addition, property owners must report any damage to street structures (such as broken drains or potholes). Property owners are also responsible for removing litter, general cleanliness, and maintaining vegetation on the green strip and ditch area up to 3 meters from the property boundary.

In spring, the city removes grit used for anti-slip treatment from roads, cycling paths, and public areas. The property owner is responsible for removing sand or gravel from the sidewalks.

Summer maintenance carried out by the city includes resurfacing of worn pavement, repainting road markings, repairing or replacing traffic signs, leveling gravel roads, and dust control.
