Ounasvaara Upper Secondary School for Athletes is the only official sports upper secondary school in Lapland. It operates within Ounasvaara Upper Secondary School and accepts students through the joint application system.
Main sports include alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, football, ice hockey, volleyball, Nordic combined, and athletics. Swimming has its own coach. Training is organized at least six hours per week, usually in the mornings.
Athletes from other sports can also apply, and individual training is arranged when needed. Studies are flexible to allow participation in competitions and training camps. Students may also transfer from other schools.
All student-athletes are members of the Lapland Sports Academy and receive support services such as physiotherapy, sports testing, coaching, nutrition advice, and mental coaching.

Additional courses allow starting French in upper secondary school. Courses in rare languages (e.g., Italian, Spanish, Japanese) are offered when possible.
Students have achieved 6 Olympic medals, around 30 World Championship medals, and over 50 Youth World Championship medals.
