If you drive a car and your point of departure or destination is not on the Ounasvaara side of the river, we recommend that you avoid Jätkänkynttilä Bridge.
The Ounaskoski Bridge will be closed on March 5th for traffic for approximately eight months. Below is a list of things to bear in mind.
Avoid Jätkänkynttilä Bridge if possible
The congestion of Jätkänkynttilä Bridge will be unavoidable as Ounaskoski Bridge is closed for traffic.
Traffic jams are most likely to occur in the morning around 8 a.m. and in the afternoon between 4 and 6 p.m. Traffic jams may also occur at the crossroads of Ounaspuistikko Road and Toripuistikko Road, and at the crossroads of Jäämerentie Road and Jätkänkynttilä Bridge.
If you drive a car and your point of departure or destination is not on the Ounasvaara side of the river, we recommend that you avoid Jätkänkynttilä Bridge. For example, those heading to the city centre from Saarenkylä are recommended to choose Kuusamontie Road and National Road No. 4 instead of Jäämerentie Road.
Reserve more time for the drive
If you cannot avoid using Jätkänkynttilä Bridge, reserve more time than usual for the drive.
Choose a bus or carpool whenever you can
The more we use the bus and carpool during the renovation, the fewer private cars and the less congestion on Jätkänkynttilä Bridge.
Local buses that normally run via Ounaskoski Bridge will run via Jätkänkynttilä Bridge during the renovation.
Walking or cycling is faster
If you live within reasonable distance from Jätkänkynttilä Bridge, this may be the perfect time to leave your car at home. Walking or cycling to the city centre and back is probably faster than driving there by car.
Give way for emergency vehicles
The smooth operation of ambulances and other emergency vehicles must be ensured despite the renovation of the bridge. If you see or hear an emergency vehicle approaching, remember to give way.
Do not take a shortcut over the ice
Even if using Jätkänkynttilä Bridge makes your route longer, do not take a shortcut over the ice near Jätkänkynttilä or Ounaskoski Bridge. Crossing the river near the city centre is highly dangerous. The only safe and certain way to reach your destination is to use Jätkänkynttilä Bridge.
If you are frustrated, think about the outcome of the renovation
Ounaskoski Bridge will be renovated to make it better for all users. The bridge will be painted, the carriageway asphalt will be replaced and the pedestrian and bicycle ways will be widened. Furthermore, the lighting and railings as well as the wooden boards along the pedestrian and bicycle ways will be replaced with new ones. The outcome will definitely be worth the effort!
