Arctic Design Week 2017 begins on Feb 20 2/6/2017 10:00 AM
The ninth Arctic Design Week 2017 will be held in Rovaniemi on February 20 to 26 to raise people’s awareness on Arctic culture, wellbeing and business opportunities through design thinking and methods.
The City of Rovaniemi, Rovaniemi Regional Development Agency, and the University of Lapland Faculty of Art and Design will co-host the event in co-operation with Science Centre Pilke, Arktikum, Korundi and various business partners. The week will bring together design professionals in the country and from abroad to discuss the possibilities and the future of Arctic Design with businesses and citizens.
The week will present design talks and workshops, design exhibitions, pop-up design shops and restaurants, an Arctic fashion show and a number of other events. It is expected to create some food for thought and soul.
This year, ‘Mish Mash,’ the new main event of the world’s northernmost design week is set to combine design experience with the national defence in a surprising way.
“Mish Mash refers to a collection of miscellaneous things and that’s why it’s such an apt term for describing an event which brings together different visions, stories and people into a ‘creative jumble’. Now’s the time to listen, challenge, debate, discuss, experience and do,” said Event Producer Julius Oförsagd.
Mish Mash will be held on February 23 and 24 in the fairy tale-like Santa Park Cavern.
In addition, Arctic shifts will be mulled over in the memorable surroundings of the Jaeger Brigade unit of the Finnish Defence Forces, said a press release.
“As a troop specialising in Arctic know-how and as an international hub of expertise, we most certainly want to be part of a brand like this. The entire outlook of the Finnish Defence Forces is that we move with the times and are part of the community,” said Jaeger Brigade Chief of Defence Staff Lt Colonel Reina Vanhanen.
Since its introduction in 2009, the Arctic Design Week has become a popular event among students of arts and design, exhibitors, shops, and company owners as well as visitors.
Apparently, this region [northern Finland] has so far been known for its unique wilderness and the exotic beauty of nature, but the Arctic Design Week is aimed at revealing another aspect of the Arctic brand to the world as well as rest of Finland. This event has also created a ground for designers and companies to attract more local consumers, even a wider interest from outside Rovaniemi, that will certainly boost the regional economy in the future, the organisers said.
Over the past few years, Rovaniemi has strengthened its position as the centre of Arctic design as it now generates global interest.
